Prejudice

The following are a couple studies that have found that there are some ways to alleviate prejudice.

1) EDUCATION: Many of you mentioned education as the key to alleviating prejudice. Visit the following website and read about an experiment by Jane Elliot, a third grade teacher who taught her students a lesson in discrimination.(Image courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net by pakorn) www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/divided/

2) COOPERATIVE TASKS: Robbers Cave Experiment
Visit the following website and read about the experiment by Sherif.

3) INTENSIVE INTERACTION: Deutsch and Collins (1951)
In a random sample white residents of public housing projects were randomly assigned to live in close proximity to Black families. The control group did not live in close proximity (separate buildings or areas). The white residents in integrated projects were less prejudiced (their levels of prejudice actually decrease from pre and post test) and were more likely to interact with their Black neighbors than those in segregated areas. The conclusion is that the more interaction we have with diverse groups of people the less prejudiced we are.

Teaching Sociology is very enjoyable for me. Sociology is like a gateway to a plethora of knowledge and understanding. The subject material is directly applicable to real-world events and situations found in everyday life. The methods and concepts of sociology yield powerful insights into the social processes shaping the contemporary world. The ability to identify and understand these processes is valuable preparation for professional participation in an ever changing and complex society.
